To be parallel, they would need to be perpendicular to the top crosspiece. Right ??

I think so too, if that is true then the angle formed when mated should form 90 degrees. I don't think combining a 37 degrees cut with a 50 degree will produce the required 90, but then again, I am not a carpenter.
