Why is it that two positives equal a positive but two negatives equal a positive as well?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because the two negatives turn to positives so it adds as a positive as.. -5+-5=10---->5+5=10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But why is that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because you cant have 2 even numbers as 2,4,6,etc. on negatives or it will turn to positives

OpenStudy (kaiiskool):

All real numbers are made to contradict from their complete opposites like the saying two wrong don't make a right, which i this case they do. it all comes back to when people only used graphs to do math because every time they multiplied negative coordinates it ended up on the positive side.
