How would you explain the steps of collecting like terms in the following expression? 3x²y − 2xy³ + 5x²y + 8x²y³ What terms match? Combine the like terms: How would you rewrite the new expression?

OpenStudy (dayakar):

separate x^2y terms

OpenStudy (xmissalycatx):

Combining like terms means to combine terms that are similar. For example, if you have and equation that says 2 + x + 4 + x , you would combine the 2 and 4 because they are similar, and then the x's because they are similar. Then you'd have 2x + 6. Now in your case, you would combine 3x²y with 5x²y because they are similar. Then, 8x²y³ and − 2xy³ would be left alone, because they don't have like terms with anything else.. they are basically the outcasts (because they're different). So, when you combine 3x²y with 5x²y you'd get 8x²y ! Now you have all of the information you need to write the equation. Hint: Just put them in order now. Hope it helped! :)
