1. It can bond to 4 other atoms, including itself. 

2. It is the primary atom for the molecular structure of life because of its ability to bond with 4 other atoms at a time and is capable of forming extremely complex and enormous molecular structures. Ever heard of "organic chemistry"? That is primarily carbon chemistry.
