let x hours be the time that amy takes to build the ramp. Melanies theresore will take 4x hours. We work out the rate of building/ hour for amy, melanie and both and this gives the equation 1/4x + 1/x = 1/2 Solve this for x . The time that melanie takes is 4x hours.
