There is a nice mathematical analysis about mountain Vesuvius here: http://peterjamesthomas.com/category/mathematics-science/mathematics-mathematics-science/pure-mathematics/ Search for "Vesuvius" it'll take you there. The analysis shows that the eruptions seem random, is that something you can use?
