So, I'm assuming Ike is the older brother and the "un-named" brother is Ike's younger brother. If Ike is is 12 years old, and his other brother is 7 years old, it would be 12-7=5. So, Ike is 5 years older than him. Then, it would be x-5. X represents Ike's age, while the 5 represents Ike being (younger or older), in this case, I assumed he is older. Ike will always be 5 years older than his other brother. So, the equation x-5 fits perfect for this. Sorry, I couldn't be much help, the question lacks clear information.
