In the figure below, angle y and angle x form vertical angles. Angle y forms a straight line with the 80° angle and the 60° angle. A straight line is shown and is marked with three angles. The first angle measures 80 degrees. The second angle measures 60 degrees. The third angle is labeled y. The line between the 60 degree angle and angle y extends below the straight line. The angle formed is labeled angle x. Write and solve an equation to determine the measure of angle x.

Hey <3 Hint* what is the angle measurement for a straight line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey!!!!! :) @johnweldon1993 <3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 80 ?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

The answer to THE question or the answer to MY question... Sorry to say but to both...not quite :/ lol

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Another hint* :P Look at the picture |dw:1448288736217:dw| See how the angle measurements up top all together look exactly like a half circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I do @johnweldon1993 and sorry the internet cut off

OpenStudy (anonymous):

180 - 80 - 60 = x x = 40 a straight line is 180, and the 80,60 and x form a straight line then you just need to find what plus 140 = 180

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

There we go :) Alright, so back to where we let off...you see how there is a half circle formed from the angles on top? What do we know about a circle? A full circle is 360 degrees right? So what is half of a circle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well its 180 :) half of the circle is 180

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Right!! So that means |dw:1448377901456:dw| So if that whole thing adds up to 180.. \[\large 80 + 60 + y = 180\] What is 'y' there?
