Notice that for each increase of 1 in x , y increases by 3.
So y is increasing in constant steps for each increase of 1 ib x
Do you think this is a linear function? If you drew a graph would it be a straight line?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ya
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i think its a linear functon
OpenStudy (welshfella):
you are right
one more thing y has a starting value of 5 when x = 0
also the slope of the line will be 3 because y is increasing in steps of 3
OpenStudy (welshfella):
straight lines have a standard equation
y = mx + b
where m = slope and b is the value of y when x = 0
so what do you think the equation be?

but 0+3 doesn't = 5 ??????
OpenStudy (welshfella):
m = 3 and b = 5 right?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i guess
OpenStudy (welshfella):
so plug those values into the standard form
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok

y = 3x + what?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
5?
OpenStudy (welshfella):
yes
y = 3x + 5 is the required equation
now you see why y = 5 when x = 0
plug in x = 0:-
y = 3(0) + 5
y = 0 + 5
y = 5
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ohhh okay now i get it
OpenStudy (welshfella):
if you draw the graph it will look something like
