You purchased a shirt on sale for $17.55.The discount on the shirt was $5.85. What was the original price of the shirt?
My answer: s-5.85=17.55 I'm not sure what "s" stands for though.. ;-;

you are correct. What it stands for is that it just means before the price was higher. After the discount it dropped 5.85$ and became 17.55$. Which is what your equation says right?
