In mammals, mature red blood cells do not have mitochondria. Instead of using oxygen to help produce ATP, they use a form of anaerobic respiration known as lactic acid fermentation to form ATP. Based on the information just given, what is the role of the mitochondria in cells that do contain mitochondria?
