You would use a semicolon whenever writing (obviously). Specifically, you would use a semicolon when connecting two independent clauses. But, they must be related to one another in subject. A semicolon can replace a period if the writer wishes to narrow the gap between two closely linked sentences.

- Example of non-matching semicolon example: I want to go skydiving; my dog likes cheese.
- Example of a proper use of a semicolon: Call me tomorrow; you can give me the answers then.
