population and sample help? well just the sample part..

OpenStudy (jessicawade):

A sociologist wants to know the opinions of students about online education. He obtains a list of 750 students who have completed an online course recently and mails a questionnaire to 100 of the students. The 100 recipients of the questionnaire were randomly selected. Only 41 of the questionnaire were returned. Clearly define the population and the sample in this study.

OpenStudy (jessicawade):

I know the population is the 750 students because that is ALL of them, but is teh sample the 41 who returned the paper or the 100?

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

I think that it is 41, since the statistical methods can be applied to the received questionnaires only!

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

please, try to ask to another helper, for a confirmation

OpenStudy (jessicawade):

thank you, I know this one is confusing lol

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

:)

OpenStudy (jessicawade):

@Luigi0210 I was told you ask you lol

OpenStudy (luigi0210):

I would agree with @Michele_Laino , the sample is data that is collected, and they only collected 41 out of the 100.

OpenStudy (jessicawade):

ok! thanks for the help.
