Two mechanics worked on a car. The first mechanic worked for 15 hours, and the second mechanic worked for 5 hours. Together they charged a total of $1675. What was the rate charged per hour by each mechanic if the sum of the two rates was $185 per hour?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lets start by writing out the two equations

I'm having trouble writing these two

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. I will start by giving each mechanic a variable. The first mechanic will have the variable m and the second mechanic will have the variable n. The first equation has to do with the rate at which they are paid. So the equation would be 15m+5n=1675. Then they tell you what the sum of the hours are so m+n=185. Does this make sense?

OpenStudy (unofficialllyy):

yes.

OpenStudy (unofficialllyy):

Then I solved and I got 75 for the first mechanic and 110 for the second

Good! It looks like you are getting a lot better at these problems!

OpenStudy (unofficialllyy):

i understand them a lot better now. :)

Keep up the good work
