x-5 = sq root(x+1)

(x-5)^2 = x +1

X^2 -10x +25 = x +1
X^2 -11x +24 = 0

Quadratic Formula
x = [--11 +-sq root(121 -4*1*24)] / 2
x = 11 +-sq root ( 25) / 2
x = 8
x = 3

Does x = 3 work when you run it back through the original equation before both sides were squared?  It may be exraneous.
