Please help me on diffusion and osmosis! MEDAL!!!
Hi :) Is there a specific question you need help with?
Yes
Gimme a minute to post the question
How are the molecules moving in the examples below? Write OSMOSIS or DIFFUSION. 1. the student sitting next to you just came from gym class and forgot to shower and you can tell. _________________
I wrote osmosis but I m not sure
Yes our cells act as semipermeable membrane
2. after sitting in the bathtub for hours, your fingers start to look like prunes. (OSMOSIS?)
Yes same
3. the girl sitting two rows ahead of you put on too much perfume this morning (DIFFUSION?)
4. one way to get rid of slugs in your garden is to sprinkle salt on them, so they shrivel up (OSMOSIS?)
5. yum! something smells good. the neighbors are cooking on the grill. (DIFFUSION?)
Yes you are right in every question till now
6. Gargling with salt water when you have a sore throat causes your swollen throat cells to shrink and feel better. (this one i am not sure)
Osmosis
b/c it has to do with movement of water right?
7. oxygen molecules move from the air sacs in the lungs across the cell membranes into the blood. (DIFFUSION?)
Osmosis is this...
why?
This reply was for your previous comment ,,,,water right?
no, it's for the one that i just asked u now.
but anyway, i have to go. thx for ur help :)
It is diffusion ,
diffusion is the movement of fluid particles from a high pressure area or u can say a high concentrated region to a low pressure or low concentrated region. For example take deodorant u keep it left open in a room for some time u'll notice that the smell reaches all over the room this is because the fluid particles of the deodorant moved from region of higher concentration[ the deodorant bottle] to a region of low concentration[ the other part of room]
Osmosis is the process of transfer of a solvent from higher concentration to lower concentration through a semi permeable membrane. For example u put a raisin and put it in water u'll see that it swells up this happens because the water molecules move from the water[higher concentration] to the raisin[ it has lower concentration of water] through the semi permeable membrane of the raisin. :)
beautiful explanation!
thanks (;
Do you ever listen about diffusion in solids?
yeah like u take potassium permanganate[its a solid] and put it in water and then it dissolves in the water and the water turns pinkish.
diffusion is not so common in solids tho
Ya not so common but also in solid and solid
Are you sure your last example is of diffusion?
