A 5-hour and 25-minute flight begins at 9:40. At what time will it end?

pooja195 (pooja195):

Hi welcome to openstudy Start by counting 5 hours from 9 o'clock don't worry about the mins yet. Tell me what time you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 3

pooja195 (pooja195):

How did you get that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you said start counting from 9 right ?

hero (hero):

Instead of adding like that, it's easier to add in Increments. That way you could accomplish the entire task using mental math.

pooja195 (pooja195):

@Hero seems to have a better approach. He can help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ugh im getting sad and confused lol im so sorry i feel embarrassed , thank you pooja and hero

OpenStudy (puppylover0617):

There's no need to feel embarrassed everyone needs help at one point of time.

pooja195 (pooja195):

Lol don't feel embarrassed :) we are here to help! ok from 9:00 add 5 hours. What do you get?

OpenStudy (ella4184):

Add 5 to 9. you should get 2:00 Next, add 25 to 40. You should get 65. subtract 60 from 65 and you get 5 add up the numbers and you have 2:05

pooja195 (pooja195):

@Ella4184 Its better to let the asker do the work than feed the answer to them. Even if you did the work.

hero (hero):

If you add 20 min you get 10:00. Now you have 5:05 left. If you add 2 hrs it will be 12:00. Afterwards You'll have 3:05 left.

hero (hero):

It was just a demonstration of why adding in increments is easier.

hero (hero):

No need to over-react @pooja195

pooja195 (pooja195):

The asker said they were confused. Rather than giving the answer in an explanation it's better to let them answer their own question.

hero (hero):

It was a demonstration the aim of which was to eliminate some of the Confusion.

OpenStudy (astrophysics):

Hey, so hero has the right idea. Your flight starts at 9:40 and you want the time 5 hours 25 minutes later. So lets look at the 25 minutes first, and take 20 minutes out and put it to the 9:40, then we have 10:00 right? Now we will have 5 hours and 5 min left, so simply add the 5 hours to the 10:00 for convenience lets write 10:00 am, that maybe helpful. 5 hours later, 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm, see we added 5 hours and now are at 3:00 pm But remember we still have the extra 5 minutes, so simply adding that we get 3:05 pm :) or 3:05 :-)
