MsBrains (ms-brains):

Please check my work?

MsBrains (ms-brains):

D

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

hmm.. what is the operation that is being performed inside of the parentheses?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

(x*4)

MsBrains (ms-brains):

=4x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes and what is that called?

MsBrains (ms-brains):

B! Multiplication

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

right, I'm aware that the x*4 equates to 4x. But I'm asking you, what operation is being performed?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

Yes! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct

MsBrains (ms-brains):

A

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

sorry, yes you are correct

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

Hint: This has something to do with groupings

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

i though it is 5th statement not 3rd lol sorry

MsBrains (ms-brains):

So A is correct..?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

I don't believe so. There is no adding happening in this step

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

@Jamierox4ev3r where you saw adding? she answered A not D. 4*11 is multiplication

MsBrains (ms-brains):

(4*11) * m +m

MsBrains (ms-brains):

Is what it says..

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

@AlexandervonHumboldt2 I never said adding...lol

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

woopers

MsBrains (ms-brains):

Guys..I'm so confused! Is it A.. or not.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

it is not A, unfortunately

MsBrains (ms-brains):

But @AlexandervonHumboldt2 said it was. 0-0

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

If you look at the question, there is nothing being multiplied at this step. There is only a change in where the parentheses lie

MsBrains (ms-brains):

Okay, so it's not A, or D, Is it B? ;-;

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

Distributive property is when you multiply inside the parentheses.

MsBrains (ms-brains):

.-. I'm sorry, So it is C, Associative?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

However, nothing is being multiplied here. All the values are staying the same, but I will reiterate: the groupings, or the "associations" have changed. Big hint there. And yes :)

MsBrains (ms-brains):

C?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

Associate property is always a pretty tough one to get. I hope it makes sense to you now

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

okay, for this one, you see that the values have moved. 10 and 6y have switched places.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

the way I like to remember this is that the values have "commuted." Think of a commute, in terms of movement. Therefore, yes, it is C. Well done!

MsBrains (ms-brains):

Awesome! one more to go!!

MsBrains (ms-brains):

I have no clue

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

I'm assuming you are more familiar with the multiplication/addition rules, so we can use our knowledge of those to help break this problem down

MsBrains (ms-brains):

Okay.

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

2. ... =5x+27 3. ... =32x What is happening at the ends of steps 2 and 3?

MsBrains (ms-brains):

Addition?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

Correct

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

typo jami: it should be 5x+27x , not 5x+27 you cannot add 5x+27

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

So this narrows our answers down to B or C. @AlexandervonHumboldt2 you're right, thank you. I was just trying to get a basic point across. @Ms-Brains hope I didn't confuse you

MsBrains (ms-brains):

I'm good, Thanks for helping everybody

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

@Ms-Brains recall what I told you about both the associative property and the commutative property. The associative property is when the groupings are changed, but the numbers/variables stay in their same locations. The commutative property is when the numbers move around ^^ So based on this, what is the answer?

MsBrains (ms-brains):

C?

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

That is correct

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

Good work!

MsBrains (ms-brains):

This one was incorrect. ;-; But thank you all so much!! You helped me so much. cx

HanAkoSolo (jamierox4ev3r):

Shouldn't have been incorrect...hmm. But you are most welcome :)
