The essay is titled Increase Our Options. Paragraph 1 (1) Teenagers need to think about the future. (2) Some career information is missing from our education. (3) We need information about other careers. Paragraph 2 (4) Competition for jobs is tough, and a college degree does not guarantee a well-paid job. (5) When I stopped at the nursery to buy some houseplants yesterday, I talked with the employee watering the plants. (6) He completed a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering last May, but he is earning little more than minimum wage while he continues to look for a job in his field. (7) He is not the only well-educated individual in such a situation. Paragraph 3 (8) Most important, though, is the fact that some stable, well-paid careers are not taught in university courses. (9) Mr. Henderson, an electrician who lives across the street from me, usually earns more than $100,000 a year. (10) Even when new construction business is slow, Mr. Henderson finds work rewiring older homes and office buildings. (11) Many people will scrape together the money to pay for electrical or car repairs even when doing so means they must do without entertainment or cultural activities for a while. (12) The failure to provide introductory courses in auto repair, electrical work, and plumbing makes it more difficult for students to learn about these career options. (13) My brother Andre likes to build and repair electronic devices such as TV sets, radios, stereos, and VCRs. (14) He is more interested in working with the actual parts and wiring than in studying in a classroom. Paragraph 4 (15) Some people have skills and talents that are not developed in traditional high school, college, or university courses. (16) My friend Susan enjoys taking apart and rebuilding transmissions. (17) Her father owns the auto repair shop down the street from our school, and Susan has helped in his shop for the past five years. (18) Her father started out teaching her how to change oil and spark plugs, and she enjoyed the work so much that she asked him to teach her how to repair transmissions. Paragraph 5 (19) Not everyone has a parent who can train him or her to repair transmissions. (20) Some students do not have access to electronic devices they can use to teach themselves to build or repair the devices. (21) Let’s add courses in every possible field, even if the course helps only one student.
