In the past women were executed for being smart and intelligence was linked to witchcraft. Men were afraid that if they let it be OK for women to be smarter than men that they would take over and be in control

Well it was caused by a fear of... well just fear. It wasn't anythings sexist, as far as I can tell. I think the lying girls might have been at fault for mainly calling women witches.
