Cody filled a container with 7 7/8 quarts of iced tea. How many 1/4 -quart glasses can be served from the container? A 1 31/32 B 3 15/16 C 31 1/2 D 15 3/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 1/4 quarts can go into 1 whole quart, so just do 7 times 4. For your remainder, the 7/8, you can convert 1/4 to 8 by just multiplying each part of the fraction by 2. So you'd have 2/8 = 1/4. How many times can 2 go into 7?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 times.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 and a half actually. The half matters here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oH OK.

So now you have 3 and 1/2 over 4. Luckily all your denominators are multiples of 4. So multiply 3 and a half by 4 and 4 by four to get your denominator to equal 16.

Ohh i got it thank you!

Hold on we're not done yet, we're still missing an important part most people forget.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok is that to simplify it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope, 1/4 or 2/8 can go into 7/8 3.5 times. That 3 has to be added to your whole number because you're measuring how many 1/4 glasses you can fill. so 4 times 7 is 28 then you add 3 to get 31. Then your remainder is still the 1/2 because you can fill up a 1/4 glass up to 1/2 or in other terms, 1/8 which is your remainder after taking out the 3.

Ohh I got it right! :D

Yup ^-^ In this case it's pretty easy to guess due to how far apart the answers are, but when you have to take the proctored tests and they don't give you any multiple choice questions it's good to remember all that xD That's why I did so bad on my algebra one a few years ago.
