As it turned out, deregulating the savings and loan industry was a bad thing. Why was this true? There were not enough consumers willing to invest in them. They engaged in risky investments, which caused many of them to collapse. Savings and loan leaders were found to be dishonest and corrupt. There was not enough money in the Federal treasury to help them out.
