Well he did open the sea trade route from Europe to India- de facto re-establishing the Silk Road (which had been cut by Muslim invasions). He also broke the monopoly on spice trade which the muslims enjoyed (and their trade allies in Venice). Vaso da Gama's presence also stopped the muslim invasion and enslavement of Africa- among others his son, Cristovao da Gama and his 500 men saved Ethiopia from Ibrahim Ghazi's invasion.
