Scientific notation involves the first digit ranging 1-9 followed by a point, then multiplied by 10 raised to however many times (a whole number) the original point was moved. Moving to the right will need a negative exponent, if it were moved to the left then the exponent is positive.

Example

Given: 234,000

In that example, the point is understood to be located at the end (looking like this 234,000.)
Now let us move the point to the first digit that falls between 1-9, that would be 2 in the example.
Let us count how many times we moved it,
(2.34,000) five times in this example so that means it is our exponent
