so we have to find the gcf (greatest common factor)
write out your factors

for 12 its (1,2,3,4,6,12)
for 20 its (1,2,4,5,10,20)

so our greatest factor is 4

divide them both by 4

12/4 = 3
20/4 = 5

our new simplified ratio is

3:5 !!
