To prevent future wars caused by aggression by an individual nation. The desire for European countries not to have to fight another major war,WW1 having been a destructive and unpleasant experience even for those on the winning side. No,the purpose was not accomplished - Italian,Japanese and German aggression was prevalent the following decade,and in 1939 another global war broke out.
