Economic arguments would be things like:
We need slaves to produce enough cotton for the mills in the North and England.
Without slavery, who would feed and house all these blacks? They can't take care of themselves.

The slaves help the tobacco industry flourishing, because they were already "owned" and it was free labor. They didn't have a back-up plan if the slaves just vanished. They also kept a multitude of farms running.
