The functions f(x) = –(x − 1)^2 + 5 and g(x) = (x + 2)^2 − 3 have been rewritten using the completing-the-square method. Is the vertex for each function a minimum or a maximum? Explain your reasoning for each function.

OpenStudy (danjs):

that depends on the direction the parabola opens, if it is up, then you have a minimum , opens down, then vfertex is the maximum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i will try it

OpenStudy (danjs):

remember if you have it in the form y = f(X) = Ax^2+bx+C the sign on the squared term tells you the direction
