Which clauses in these sentences are restrictive?
1.The girl with the golden hair is the one we are looking for.
2. The dog that ate my homework is called Henry. 3. I’m saving the muffins that have cherries for my sister. 4. The smile that she gave them was beautiful.
Do you know what a restrictive clause is?
Not really):
Restrictive clauses limit the possible meaning of a preceding subject.
So for example...
The suspect in the lineup who has red hair committed the crime. Note how the subject "suspect" in this sentence is restricted in two ways: we know that this suspect is both in the lineup and has red hair. As a result, we know that the other suspects, who are not in the lineup, could not have committed the crime. Moreover, of those suspects in the lineup, we know that the one suspect in the lineup with red hair committed the crime. If there were more than one suspect in the lineup with red hair, the above usage would be incorrect because it implies a different meaning.
So on the first one, would it be. "with the golden hair?"
If you don't know a word or anything, try Googling it~! :3
Yeah! Do you get it now?
The second would be "That ate my homework." Third "That have cherries." And forth "Was beautiful."
Yeah, great job.
Could you help me with a few more?
Sure.
It would mean the world!
Thank you!
No problem.
What trait typical of the romantic era is featured in Washington Irving’s short story "The Devil and Tom Walker"? 1.the emphasis on individual choice 2.the emphasis on human optimism 3.the emphasis on the beauty of nature 4.the emphasis on the importance of society
Sorry, I'm not familiar with that story. :(
Okay, I'll guess this one
Try narrowing down the choices if you are guessing, that way you have a higher chance of getting it right.
Which sentences contain a restrictive clause? 1. We fed the kittens that we found in the shed. 2. My grandmother, who was growing crankier by the day, scolded him harshly. 3. This is the house that I grew up in. 4. Our teacher, who was always ready to share in a good joke, laughed with us.
This is the same as the first question, what are your guesses?
2 and 4?..
I feel like all of them have a restrictive clause...
Really? How so?
In the first one it could be "found in the shed" and in the third one it could be "that I grew up in" because it narrows down what the down could be like specifically.
So do you think it's all four, or just one and three? I had one and three at first but I thought i kept getting it wrong.
Yeah, I think it might just be one and three...
