Personally I think they're invisible to many rich people, but not the people who used to be just like them, or are close to being it. The poor ARE nearly invisible, practically, because to many, they're simply people who brought on their financial problems to themselves. But  in most cases, they're actually not.

They're not ACTUALLY invisible, just mentally invisible.

They are metaphorically invisible. They have no social power and so can't stand out and fight for their own causes (largely speaking). Rich people and industries have loud voices because their money buys them seats at the tables of politicians and policy makers.

I think segments of the poor feel actually invisible too. I was downtown in a big city once and a homeless woman asked me for money. I looked her in the eye and said sorry, I don't have any money on me. She stepped up to me and gave me a big hug because I looked at her and responded instead of just ignoring her. She definitely felt invisible. It's understandable that when we see people living on the street, we want to look away. But it has real and damaging effects on those people.
