How do I simplify: -√-169?

OpenStudy (hennawho):

you pull out an i and just take the root so its -13i

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would ignore the negative signs because its -(-) which equals a + so just find the square root of of 169

OpenStudy (welshfella):

no - thats not correct this is the square of negative 169 which is an imaginary number have you come across the operator 'i' ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but i=-1 so would another neg. cancel the i out?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

i = sqrt(-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mmkay... So the answer is... 13i

OpenStudy (welshfella):

no - 13i
