Scientists map where earthquakes take place and by doing so, are able to track how the surface of the Earth is changing. Charting the magnitude of earthquakes in an area, over time, tells scientists many things. In areas where strong earthquakes occur, scientists monitor the rocks, movement, and stresses on the rocks. They enter this information in a computer model that provides them with estimates or predictions of when another earthquake might occur and how strong it may be.
