The method to solve such problems basically lies in the splitting part

2(x squared)+3x+5
-----------------          = (2x^2)/x  +(3x)/x+5/x 
             x

 I hope you get the idea.

Thanks, all my friend would tell me is that I was supposed to simplify it and that you couldn't necessarily solve it.

See, you cant't get a value for x unless you equate this to a number. Unless that we can only simplify it. Your friend is absolutely right!
