What was the result of the election of 1800? Two men of different political parties had to serve with one another as President and Vice President. John Adams dropped out of the race as a result of the Sedition Act and the XYZ Affair. The Constitution had to be amended to require electors to vote separately for President and Vice President. The federal government outlawed duels as a result of the conflict between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton.
