OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

The colonies were treated individually by the English. They originally were not supposed to trade with one another. But they traded and shared ideas through newspapers and mail. The ideas of independence and liberty developed differently in Virginia and Massachusetts. But the shared ideas were enough to influence people in all the colonies to take action. Before the Declaration of Independence, the colones set up Committees of Correspondence specifically to keep each other informed.
