Primary succession takes place in barren land with no vegetation. Mosses, algae etc. are the plants which initiate primary succession and these are called as Pioneer species. After primary succession, secondary succession takes place.
And also, primary succession takes place when there is no soil. Mosses and lichens help break rocks and facilitate soil formation and thus pave the way for secondary succession.
