A theater company charges $5.75 per ticket for people of all age groups. If c represents the total number of children who bought tickets and a represents the total number of adults who bought tickets, which expression best represents the total money earned by the company from the sale of tickets?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. 5.75c + a B. c + 5.75a C. 11.5(c + a) D. 5.75(c + a)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

If the price is the same for all, just add together the numbers of people in all age groups and mult. that sum by the ticket price.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

How many children attended? How many adults attended? Answer with letters that represent these numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

then what? How many people, total, attended?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If everyone pays the same for the tickets, then children pay 5.75c and adults pay 5.75a. Right? You add them together and get 5.75a + 5.75c. BUT you can factor out the 5.75 cuz it's common, and you are left with the expression 5.75(c+a)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Great. Great explanation! Very good, Joe. You're wise. ;)
