Help with Log Properties

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

OpenStudy (0487308):

First, try to solve for a, and tell me what you get. If you need help, just ask.

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

How do I set it up? I am totally confused on this one

OpenStudy (0487308):

Make a logarithmic graph with y-intercept 1.

OpenStudy (0487308):

The equation for the graph is y = 3^x.

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

Alright I just input it in my calculator

OpenStudy (0487308):

Now look at where y is about 0.5. What do you have?

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

The y-intercept?

OpenStudy (0487308):

Ignore what I said at first lol. a is about -0.631. Now solve the logarithms, substituting that for a.

OpenStudy (0487308):

Because \[\log_{a}3 \approx 0.5, 3^{a} =0.5,\] which is why we made that graph.

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

When I input it in it says ERROR NONREAL ANSWERS

OpenStudy (0487308):

Sorry, I was solving it as an antilog. Really, \[a \approx 9\] because \[a ^{0.5} = 3\], so plug a as 9 into your calculator. Again, sorry :P

OpenStudy (0487308):

Remember to round your answers to the nearest 10th

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

So the first one is .82?

OpenStudy (0487308):

Yes.

OpenStudy (0487308):

I meant round to the nearest 100th, sorry

OpenStudy (0487308):

So do you get it now?

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

One sec almost done

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

I think I put the wrong amount of decimal places

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

Because the only one I got correct was the last one lol

OpenStudy (0487308):

lol

OpenStudy (0487308):

How do you know if you got something right or wrong?

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

For some reason I got Part C wrong but the rest were right

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

I have three chances to get the question correct, if I get it correct it turns green

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

For Part C I got .95

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

I don't understand why it's wrong

OpenStudy (0487308):

I'm pretty sure that that's right, because \[\log_{9} 8 = 0.94639463036\approx 0.95 \]

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

Ugh it says the answer was .96 :(

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

So I got all of them right except Part C

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

Thanks for helping I really appreciate it

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

Can you help with another one?

OpenStudy (0487308):

That's weird, you should talk to your teacher about that, and maybe he can correct or further explain...

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

Do you know how to do this?

OpenStudy (0487308):

I'll try… I'm only in Algebra II...

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

I couldn't even figure it out on Mathway, I thought you simply plug in the numbers but it doesn't work. Almost all the answers are regular numbers like 23, 8, etc.

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

On my previous tries that's how I know what the answers will be like

OpenStudy (0487308):

For a, I got about 3.1543373037306295775285947507683823509222940831872816

OpenStudy (0487308):

I don't know what you have to round to, is it two digits again?

OpenStudy (0487308):

It's probably 3.15

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

Some were whole numbers

OpenStudy (0487308):

Do you mean the actual answer, or the parts (like a^-4)

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

The actual answer

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

The answers are a)=10 b)=6

OpenStudy (0487308):

I haven't done all of them yet, but a isn't.

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

c)=-0.20833333333333

OpenStudy (0487308):

I'll do c and see what I get.

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

I went ahead and jumped to the answer to see if you were doing it correctly

OpenStudy (0487308):

Can you wait a sec, I need to finish my homework. I'll be back in about 5 minutes.

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

Oh okay no problem

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

I'm going to go eat, so take your time

OpenStudy (0487308):

okay

OpenStudy (0487308):

I'm back. I think that I did a wrong, so I'm doing it again right now.

OpenStudy (0487308):

I did a again, and I got 12.920558458320164071748303635625470295773499596979904

OpenStudy (0487308):

Rounded, that is obviously 12.92

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

I'm back, sorry for taking so long

OpenStudy (brandonw998):

Thanks for all your help man I really appreciate it!

OpenStudy (0487308):

No problem!
