OpenStudy (realsiege):

so imagine there's a big fire in a building, and you (a firefighter) need to save a kid on the 5th floor. you gotta measure how long your ladder is so it reaches the 5th floor. if c^2=a^2+b^2 squared (im on my phone sorry) c^2 will be your ladder, a^2 will be the ground, and b^2 will be the building.

It is known that the Egyptians used a knotted rope as an aid to constructing right angles in their buildings. The rope had 12 evenly spaced knots, which could be formed into a 3-4-5 right triangle, thus giving an angle of exactly 90 degrees. http://www.geom.uiuc.edu/~demo5337/Group3/hist.html
