I might just ask which organism are you referring???? :p In case of Humans, germinal cells multiply by mitosis and mature gametes are formed by meiosis.... Just for example Germinal epithelium is formed my mitosis & it undergoes meiosis .......

Just keep in mind that the produced gametes are always haploid...So, if the Gametophyte or Main body in Diploid...It undergoes meiosis & if is haploid...Mitosis occurs......
