My friend V what you asked has actually happened in history. In the year 1402, the Mongol Khan Timur Leg(Tamerlane) invaded the Turkish empire from the East, with a great Mongol army numbering 800000(all cavalry) men(modern scholars state the size at 100-140 thousand cavalry) The Turkish Sultan Bayezid I(called gildirim=thunderbolt) rushed to meet him from the Balcans with an army of 350000 men(modern historians estimate 90000-100000 total strength). Both armies met in the Ancara plateau in 20th July 1402 and the Turkish army was destroyed and after some time Bayezid was captured and made to pay tribute to the Mongols. The battle had serious effects in the Balcans since it stopped Turkish expansion there and allowed Constantinople to breath and take counter-measures but the west missed that great chance to take advantage of the Turkish temporary incapacity, and stem Turkish expansion dreams once and for all... The Turks have done everything possible to forget this great defeat even Kemal Ataturk in 1919 decided to make Ancara the capital of new Turky to show evidence of Turkish resilience.
