8th grade math question ? help ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pooja195 (pooja195):

Start by finding the starting point where does the line touch on the y axis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I honestly have no clue. I dont know anything about functions or graphs.

pooja195 (pooja195):

The line that goes up and down (vertical) is the y axis What number is the line touching?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no no its 2 right ?

pooja195 (pooja195):

|dw:1449531655258:dw|

pooja195 (pooja195):

Try again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I really thought it was either 2 or 4... I dont know. I understand if you dont want to help me anymore haha

pooja195 (pooja195):

Nawh i prefer to help you no matter what it takes :) let's start of with the basics |dw:1449531766772:dw|

pooja195 (pooja195):

So we have a graph labeled with 2 axis' x and y in the equation y=mx+b m is the slope and b is the y-intercept understood? So far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, I understand the concept of it all, but its just the numbers that make me confused.

pooja195 (pooja195):

Ok basically the y intercept is the starting point of the line

pooja195 (pooja195):

|dw:1449531912992:dw| See where i labeled that dot?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah.

pooja195 (pooja195):

that is where the line was touching the y axis so the b part of our equation is -2 Do you get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so b can be crossed out

pooja195 (pooja195):

Correct Any ideas on how to find the slope?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sadly, nope

pooja195 (pooja195):

Alright that's fine Slope=rise/run If it's a negative slope then you count down Here look |dw:1449532203598:dw| Basically you pic a random point in which the line goes through and see how you can get to the next point can you figure out the slope with the drawing i provided?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im still very confused but I do see your point sorta. and imma say I think its C.

pooja195 (pooja195):

C is correct lol I suggest looking at this http://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/slope.html

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks! :D

pooja195 (pooja195):

yw ^_^
