Qin Shi Huang's name means "Commencing Emperor" or "First Emperor." Why was he called that name when the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties were far older? Earlier dynasties were not really Chinese. The first emperor of every dynasty was traditionally called "First Emperor." Qin Shi Huang gave himself this boastful name because he was the first king to add Southern China to the kingdom of Northern China, creating a real empire. Qin Shi Huang established the Qin dynasty, one of the longest running dynasties in Chinese history.
