i'd suggest that you actually graph the equations in question. That way, you'll see immediately whether or not the graphs cross. if they do, you have ONE solution. If they never touch, there's NO solution. If they coincide (one sits on top of the other), there are INFINITELY MANY SOLTUIONS.
