First, you need to understand what imperialism is. The essay question gives a hint about the definition: "increased US involvement overseas." Imperialism is when when one country imposes it's own culture, views, laws, etc. [ on another country, usually one that is some distance away. For example, England was imperialistic towards the American colonies. It was imperialism behind the war with
Mexico in which the US gained the land that is now New Mexico, Arizona, California, etc. In the late 1800's, many people believed the US should exert it's power over other countries. The essay question is asking you to give three reasons why people would think that. It was a common and popular practice for many European countries at the time, but it is not acceptable in today's political climate.
