Well, it depends on one of two things. Firstly, what type of poem are you writing in regards to either a Sonnet, an Acrostic, or a Limerick. Secondly, what is the poem about in relation to subject matter.
But one thing I think makes a poem epic is being able to grab a point, shrink it to as little words as possible and yet still be bold in a pithy manner.
Another thing that is epic, is the power of imagery and emotion that you the author of the poem are able to convey to your reader. 
One other thing, is strength. Your poem cannot be weak in wording, and in stitching its ideas together.

And @brandon554 no, I am not going down any list. I'm simply writing from my own experience. I've been writing poems for eight lyrics. I've learned alot on my own.
