To be able to explore the new land that was gained through the Louisiana Purchase, and to determine if it was able to be settled.

you should look at it like why not? there is no loosing side for big jeff to finiance there mission. He either finds out the unknown or finds out the unknown and maybe finds the fountain of youth or something. Also, he wanted to do it because with the map that lewis and clark brought back, the us used to help navigate the deep west when fighting indians

Zebulon Pike also explored into the what was then Mexico and is now the Southwest United States. His explorations partially led to the addition of the Southwest that was gained as the Mexican Cession in 1848 following the Mexican-American War.
