CRISPR/Cas is also really popular these days, might still be for another 20 years. I personally worked with type III-B in S. islandicus at the Danish Archaea Center.

The most important going on right now, is the investigation of a unified mechanism regarding type III cleavage mechanisms as both type III-A and type III-B starts to approach each other. Furthermore is still the issues in the classification in the more rare subtypes within type III.

If you are interested in applicational use of CRISPR/Cas then go to type II which the now really famous Cas9 that so far has shown great potential for the use of gene editing and designing (and is one of the focus areas for 2016 in the fight against diseases obtained by inheritance).

I would highly recommend not to go into type I and specifically type I-E as the areas has been dominated by van der Oost and provided what today many consider a full mechanism.
