The problem doesn't exactly specify whether this enclosure needs 3 or 4 sides :-(

Depending on why you are fencing it, you may or may not need to fence the side that is bordered by the river.

Do you want to do 3 sides, or 4 sides?

You should use three sides. Otherwise the fact that the river is there is totally irrelevant.

Agreed with that reasoning, but still sticking by my guns that the problem is not well-written :-)

So, if we go with 3 sides, rectangular, can you write an expression for the perimeter in terms of length and width, and an expression for the area enclosed?
