Try to find the key questions and figure out what you need to include in your essay. What are they asking? What peices of the work do they need me to included? What examples do they need me to include to understand my answer?

Well, as I have not read Africa's history of colonial rule, the one thing that might gain you extra credit is explaining how a sense of pride is important to a sense of self worth.
That would maybe be a good way to introduce the essay.
I unfortunately know nothing about africa's history of colonial rule, so the best I can do is give that as a tip.
